Studley Park Boathouse connection to the river and integration of slope of the land into design.

STUDLEY PARK BOATHOUSE - STUDIO WATER

TUTOR: Nafiseh Hamidi UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE Studley Park Boathouse is a design proposal for a new mixed use facility on the banks of the Yarra River in Melbourne. The premise of Studio Water is the in depth study of a master architect, followed by development of a proposal that reflects the ideas/philosophies of that architect. Our studio undertook a study of Alvar Aalto and I was drawn to Villa Mairea & Saynatsalo Town Hall as a precedent. This project taught me a valuable lesson regarding the need to get on top of software learning as soon as you possibly can in architecture school or you are going to suffer a lot of pain. I spent a huge amount of time developing a set of cad drawings with plans and elevations, but at the end of it all, I had neither a digital model nor a physical model. Having put off getting up to speed on 3D modeling in any of Rhino, Sketchup or 3D MAX during the holidays, I wasn't able to take advantage of being able to generate plans, sections, elevations and most importantly perspectives from a 3D model. A digital 3D model in Rhino could have been unrolled and laser/card cut and put together easily compared to the work of a handmade physical model.
